You're Not Alone, No One Wants to Watch the Nightly News
Updated: May 1
When I talk to voters in the community and tell them I'm running for office for the first time, they cock their head to the side in bewilderment. A few have even verbalized their confusion. Why would anyone in their right mind get involved in politics?
Many people have told me they can't stand to watch the nightly news anymore. Politics are so unseemly. There is no decorum, no civility, no such thing as a polite conversation about who's in the presidency or even with which party we are affiliated.
It seems we're all running around afraid of saying the wrong thing. Heck, we may have family members with whom we have to walk on eggshells around. Regardless of how tight one's family bonds are or aren't, what can possibly be so important as to be worth starting a family squabble, right?
I shudder to think what my dear departed parents would think if they saw the state of politics right now. They would be appalled to see the schism that has divided and separated our nation, groups, and family events and activities. Its hard to avoid the hot topics in politics when they dominate the forefront of our family television time.
Now, as we find ourselves in the middle of an unprecedented global pandemic, not even an event of this magnitude can truly cut the dissension out of the political atmosphere. Yes, thankfully we have managed to get bailout bills passed. The temporary reach across the isle adds a glimmer of hope to our pathetic situation, but one can't help but be concerned that the minute this crisis gets a modicum of resolution, it will be back to business as usual, which to be honest has been little to no business at all.
We can no longer afford to be afraid. Democracy is at stake here. If you don't have the stomach for taking action with your family (and who can blame you) and you're not yet ready to run for office yourself, please take the time to vote. Register online here; https://www.nvsos.gov/sosvoterservices/Registration/Step0.aspx You will be sent a ballot and all you have to do is fill it out and mail it in. You will have fulfilled your civic duty and you can fall asleep at night with the television news on while watching your dreams realized.
